I`ve decided to make a stock for my Rapid. I am in need of advice as to : Where to obtain the blank
Whats the best Wood
Tools needed and finishing compounds required.
Also I`m toying with a thumbhole stock idea views on this would be appreciated, is it very difficult? and an adjustable cheek piece would be preffered I think. All posts will be answered.

Hi mate,
Do a search for me, as I have now made 2 stocks and photographed the whole process and put up posts.

StevenB is the most helpful, knowledgable guy when it comes to wood and was a fantastic help to me.

I got my wood from a local hardwood timber merchant and paid 20 quid for an off cut of walnut that turned out really nice!!

No its not easy and you will make mistakes, but keep on asking and putting up photo's and you will get help from the guys.

Cheers

fram.

Hi Timekid,
just nip to your nearest joiners and ask them to cut it out for you, they are normally quite obliging if you bung them a fiver for the tea fund :D

Got an Ash blank enough for two for only £15, this is a practice run as I have ordered a Zegreabo blank, thats spelt wrong anyway its a grey wood with black waves through it, and I was very impressed with the few I`ve seen made with this.

The work starts tommorow and I`ll keep you posted with the progress and problems, which will be many.

Thank you BBS! where would we be without you guys.

Hi mate,
Did you mean Zebrano? lovely wood with a nice grain pattern. Don't forget the photo's. I have made a few guitars and bass bodies with Ash and they do look lovely when oiled up.

Good luck mate

Sorry guys for not getting back on here sooner, but things go in spurts remember this is only a practise run. So far have cut out shape, thumbhole
and depth for the action. Started sanding and rubbing down.
Thats the good bits. Mistakes and there is a few, Depth is a little to deep and width for the action is a little to wide about 1mm either side and 2mm on depth.
Putting a finish on the hand grip? any suggestions and the forestock again need a few ideas? will up-date tomoz with a few pics.

Thanks, I`ve enjoyed making it so much, I`m making another for my
S410. This time I`ll go a bit slower.
I realise that Ash isn`t a favourite for stocks
because as hard woods go it can tear. Plus points it takes stain and oil
really well.
